Technology gets most of the attention in mainframe modernization.
New tools. New architectures. Automation. AI. DevOps. Cloud integrations.
And yes, all of that matters.
But one of the clearest takeaways from this year’s Mighty Mainframe Conference was much simpler:
Technology alone isn’t enough for successful mainframe modernization. People and culture are the key.
Because modernization changes more than technology
A mainframe can be technically ready for change long before the organization around it is.
Modernization often means changing the way teams work together, how knowledge is shared and how decisions are made. It means bringing together people who have spent decades working with the platform and those approaching it with completely different technologies, skills and expectations.
That combination can be incredibly powerful.
But only if modernization is treated as something people participate in, rather than something that simply happens to them.
The knowledge is already in the room
Some of the most valuable assets in a mainframe environment cannot be found in a repository or architecture diagram.
They live in the experience of the people who understand why a system behaves the way it does, why certain decisions were made and which seemingly small dependencies actually keep critical business processes running.
Successful modernization finds ways to preserve that knowledge while making room for new skills, new tools and new ways of working.
It is not about choosing between mainframe experience and modern engineering.
It is about connecting the two.
Technology enables change. People make it stick.
There is no single modernization path that works for every organization.
What does seem universal is that the best technology will only take you so far without shared understanding, ownership and a culture willing to evolve alongside it.
That was true at Mighty Mainframe 2026.
