I am Viktor Quina, and I began my career in mainframe technology in 2024, the same year I graduated from Hogeschool Ghent’s mainframe curriculum.
In September 2024, I joined KBC as a Mainframe Systems Engineer specializing in Storage and Hardware Configuration.
A question I often receive is, “Why Mainframe?”
For me, the answer was simple. Initialy, I knew little about mainframes, which sparkled my curiosity.
As I explored the field, I realized that mainframes are far from outdated machines tucked away in a basement – they are critical, modern systems that power essential operations worldwide.
I saw mainframe technology as a unique opportunity to develop a highly specialized skillset that is increasingly scarce in today’s job market.
That is why I am particularly interested in discussing the growing skills gap in mainframe expertise – a challenge that could become one of the most pressing issues in the near future.
